Cenni storici e sul territorio:
Monreale (Sicilian: Murriali or Muntriali), one of the towns with the highest population density in Sicily, belongs to the Metropolitan City (the former province) of Palermo and constitutes an urban agglomeration with the capital. The city was founded by the Normans in the 11th century and used to be a place of retreat for the Norman kings. According to the legend, during a night in 1171, the Virgin Mary appeared to King Wilhelm II and revealed where he could find a huge treasure, ordering him to build a new church in her honor. In 2015, the monuments of Arab-Norman Palermo and the Cathedral Churches of Cefalù and Monreale were declared Unesco World Heritage Site.
